210 causing system stutters ?

Let's see if I've got this right...

You have an AVI file that plays back choppy on a system w/ an o210. If you disable the audio and video devices in the device manager the file plays back fine.

Next step: Just disable one of the two devices (just the audio and then just the video). Does it require both to be disabled in order for playback to be ok?

Yes it seems a clue could be the fact that you don't get audio when the audio device is enabled. (Do I have this right?). If so then it appears that with the o210 audio device enabled that the default audio output device is the o210. While the o210 is not a playback device it does create a 'fake' playback device because this was needed on some systems where there were no other audio playback devices. If the o210 is the selected output device this might cause the stutter. The fake output device is supposed to just take in audio data and toss it but perhaps there is an issue here. Some applications allow the user to select the output audio device. Others use only the "selected / preferred" output device. This is set in the control panel's 'sounds and multimedia' control dialog.

So another question is, what is the "preferred" sound playback device AND is the checkbox for "use only preferred devices" selected?

Files captured on this stuttering system will playback smoothly on another system.

I've checked for IRQ conflicts, and everything is fine.

The soundcard is a US$1000 Creamware Pulsar-II which is powerful, flexible and has never had a problem with any other app. I'll try reinstalling the software for this card. But would the audio card cause video playback stutter ?

The fundamental thing that I've discovered is that if I turn off both the audio and video aspects of the 210 in the device manager then everything returns to normal. What does that means the problem is ?

I desperately want to keep the Osprey card in this system . . .  .

Do the files only stutter on this system ? In other words if you play the file back on another system does the file still stutter ?  I have seen instances where the issue could stem from an  incorrect audio driver for the soundcard. Typically installing the latest latest audio driver for your card may resolve this issue.  If the stutter occurs on a different system as well, then there might be a resource conflict between the Osprey card and soundcard. I would recommend uninstalling and removing the soundcard from the system. Then capture a file with the Osprey card and see if it plays back fine. If yes, simply place the soundcard back in the system and hopefully both cards will function properly.

I just moved my Osprey 210 card from my 866MHz PIII 512Mb to my 1.8MHz P4 512Mb (Asus P4B266). Funny thing is that on the PIII (which is has all sorts of junk programs on it and low free system resources) the playback of AVI files was 100% smooth.

But on the P4 I'm suddenly getting the stutters. Even just playing back tiny AVI files using the default media player gives me masses of dropped frames, whereas before I installed, playback was perfect. Playback in VegasVideo3 is now often stuttering. But before I installed the Osprey I'd NEVER seen a single stutter in VV3. Perhaps worse, VV3 doesn't stutter all the time, just about 50% of the time. But the XP mediaplayer ALWAYS drops frames.

Also, strangely enough, the card prevents the default media players from outputting audio. I have to disable the card in the device manager before I get audio output. Output in all my apps is OK (AcidPro3, SF6, VV3). Curious methinks. Could that be a clue to something ?

I've wracked my brains trying to think of why, but have come up with nothing. Why would my card cause this ? Did the installation overwrite something ? Is it a problem on the PCI bus somehow? Does something in XP need tweaking ? (I tweaked it primarily for audio) Why does it prevent audio out from clips in the media player but allow the ,main apps to play audio OK ? Argh ! Why so many problem son my "good" machine when it worked smoothly on my "junk" machine ?

I'm thinking I should uninstall the Osprey card and hopefully everything will go back to normal. But for obvious reasons I'd like to have capture and editing on the same machine !

Any thoughts no matter how odd are appreciated - I'm blank . . .
