Hello,

I thought that the comments posted in this forum, http://forum.viewcast.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=419&PN=1 against viewcast were a little mean.

Windows Vista is a brand new OS and a real pain to code for.  All of the changes in this version plus its buggyness and long list of incompatibilities make coding new drivers and software very tough.

We have been buying Viewcast products for years and have received excellent support every time we needed it.  To say they've got "their head in the sand" isn't fair.

Sorry but I think it is a fair comment.  Most other manufacturers have managed to follow Vista's progress over a period of several years and - at the very least - have Beta versions available for general public release.  Granted, Microsoft's change in design philosophy regarding DirectX has complicated the issue but ATI and nVidia have coped - as has Pinnacle, for example.

Vista hasn't exactly been a surprize. Officially available betas have been available to the public for at least 12 months.

Considering the Osprey cards are still being advertised as "the de facto standard in the streaming media industry" (http://www.viewcast.com/pages.asp?page=osprey"), I don't think it unreasonable to assume that their driver availablilty would reflect that.

Hi again,

Perhaps you're right.  All I can tell you is that so far we HATE Vista because coding for it is so hard (and by hard, I mean expensive), so I feel for other companies that have this headache.

Cheers!

Vista drivers will be available this summer for both 32 and 64 bit O/S's. The decision was taken to can the previous 64 bit program due to unresolved installer issues (unresolved by Microsoft). The focus was switched to Vista but as with all things, a limited amount of resources meant that the majority of the available effort has been focused on getting the new Osprey 240 and 700HD products out the door. Together these cards plug a hole in the current line-up and greatly expand the capabilities of the range. As part of the release of these cards there is a completely new driver set including a new application called Osprey Aviator, which is a vast improvement over SwiftCap (not called SwiftCrap for nothing). However, I feel I must point out that SwiftCap was only ever written as a demo for the SDK, not a product in it's own right.

ATI, nVidia and Pinnacle have all been mentioned in comparison. Whilst it is flattering to be mentioned in such company it is also only fair to point out that all of these companies have considerably more resources to call upon to support a new O/S than ViewCast does. This is not meant to be offered up as an excuse, simply an explanation of the realities of life in a small company.

Please bear with us whilst we try to repay the loyalty of our customers by continuing to develop new, exciting and above all, reliable products.

Thanks for the informative post.  As I'd written in the previous thread, I've always found ViewCast's technical support very helpful and confess that I had never thought of ViewCast as a "small company".

As an even smaller company, my main concern is that computer failure tends to equate to computer replacement which, in turn, equates to switching from XP to Vista (whether we like it or not - try getting reasonable spec PC with XP on it!).  As this would currently  equate to replacing the capture cards, I look forward to the new drivers being available "this summer".

John.

I'm happy to hear this.  The frustration level from the older 64-bit drivers thread peeked into despair...well, sort of anyways: it got locked.  Now that Vista is out, 64-bit XP will most likely faaaaade away.  I figured that Viewcast would concentrate on 64-bit Vista drivers.  I can hardly wait!

I think the comments posted about viewcast are bang on

Can you even buy a computer off the shelf now without Vista ... I don't think so

I have 10 encoding machines here with Vista and Osprey 530 / 300 cards. I've been waiting for drivers for Vista now for at least 1 year and we still keep getting the same standard reply .. they are on their way.

Ok then

WHEN WILL THEY BE DONE ......... HURRY UP ... You are Lossing Customers

OK, folks time for a little update

The latest drivers you already have are Vista compatible. Yep, you read correctly, the recently-released WHQL drivers for Legacy cards, and the already-shipping driver for the new Osprey 240 are Vista compatible already. Same driver, same install experience (I'm told).

Note, however, that these drivers are not officially sanctioned and tested in QA with Vista yet. So, please report any Vista problems directly to the Beta program E-mail address at [email protected].

ViewCast's normal Support channels WILL NOT BE SUPPORTING THESE DRIVERS UNTIL THEY ARE OFFICIALLY RELEASED. So please use the email above for ALL Vista related support.

One known difference: The preferred names used on Driver property pages to identify multiple cards in the same machine receive concatenations from Vista that cause them to overflow standard combo boxes. They are still readable, just ugly. This will be fixed in the official release.

Please note that none of the above is valid for the new Osprey 700HD card as yet, there will be more information to follow regarding that one.

Hello,

Currently there are no Windows Vista drivers available for any Osprey card. When Vista drivers are available, we will make an announcement through our Osprey news letter, and the new product will also be made available on our driver downloads page.

Best regards,

Andrew
