I am providing a solution for automated classroom recording and would like to be able to switch among 2-3 camera angles.

In the typical deployment environment, I can get a control signal from an audio DSP such as the BSS SoundWeb.  It sends an RS-232 message to indicate which camera should be selected based on where sound is coming from in the room.  Indeed, there are external video switchers that can receive this input and do the necessary, such as those provided by Extron and Kramer.

But it would be a simpler, less expensive setup if I could programmatically switch the inputs of say an Osprey 100.  I have looked through the AVStream SDK and the control does seem to be there, but before I go out and hire a C programmer to implement my requirement, I thought the forum might be able to help me with a few preliminary queries.

- Is it the crossbar functions that I use to accomplish cuts-only switching between 2-3 composite inputs?

- Does the crossbar switch transition during the vertical interval, so that switching occurs without video signal disruption?

- Are there GPI triggers on any of the Osprey products that do the same thing without custom programming?

- Has someone else already implemented an input switching control that I could use to control the switching from a higher level language (eg- Java or VB)?

- Are the presets for contrast, luminance, and saturation in any way effected by switching (hopefully not)?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,
There is a company in the UK that sells a product that is a software video server pkg. It is sold also bundled to the osprey 100 so as to save the customers money. It is called a 4 port video Server. Any way the software allows you the user to use ALL 4 ports. Yes they built the S/W to control the 100 & 200 series of this companies cards. Now depending on your end use you could just get the software and a 21 day free demo licence and see how they are doing it or you can buy the S/W or heck maybe just ask thier engineers how it is done.
Now MOST quad input video capture cards all seem to use the same concept for control. Each video input is attached to 1 of 4 inputs on the Decoder chip, then using software the port select register is then written to and that port then becomes the active port. One can then switch between each input & that input is the turned into digital data and routed out thru the pci bus.
So one can view only one input at a time but then if you wanted to see all 4 at one time you would need 4 seperate cards or a quad video capture card with 4 video decoders on it.
Now the actual way to do it is to download the datasheet for the DECODER chip and see what is needed to write to the input selection registers thus changing the camera being digitized. Normally the driver is used for the control but there is nothing stopping you from sending a group of hex words to certain i/o address & offsets thus changing the input line being selected.
There is a universal driver out that allows for you to test your card and send commands to the registers to see what needs to be sent to change the inputs. This is because not all mnf's use the same ports in any certain order.
          Good luck,
