hello, I am using the Osprey-560 Capture card w/a breakout box for balanced audio (XLR).  I am experiencing poor audio quality.  Hot audio, like the gain is all the way up somewhere.  I have confirmed the source signal is clean going into the breakout box.  I have also tried multiple breakout boxes with the same results.  The audio mixer software is set properly.  Has anyone seen this issue?  Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing?  Thank you very much.

Hi, have you used the Audio Configuration applet to set the hardware's gain/attenuation to correspond with the incoming signal?  If not, I'd give that a try; it's counter-intuitive however, so read the documentation.  For example, if your audio is too hot then move the slider on the left so the hardware can attenuate it (it's best to set the dbu the same as the incoming, if you know it), then move the slider on the left to increase / decrease the recorded volume from the new reference level.

If you're not using the latest 3.1.0 driver from ViewCast Osprey then you'll need to install the patches for the 2.2.2 driver and read the readme.txt file for information on how to accomplish the same as above manually in the registration.

I'm running the most recent drivers (2.2.1 Patch5, Osprey-500).  Mistakingly thought it was the 560.  I updated the Hw/Sw Boost contols in the registry but was unable to fix the issue.  The settings were taking effect, but even with the gain down, the audio was still hot/distorted.  I re-confirmed that the source is clean and switched the breakout box with a known working one with still no luck.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

Hmm, if using the registry settings in the documentation for HWboost and/or SWboost  didn't help you to lower the incoming audio's recorded level (don't forget you have to restart the device via Windows Device Manager or by restarting the system for the changes to take effect) then is it possible that what you are hearing has to do with a sampling mismatch and not the audio being too hot?

Sometimes the clicks/pops associated with a sampling rate mismatch can be mistaken for the audio being overmodulated, or too hot.  Try changing the sampling rate on the source device (assuming you're using a digital device and not the analog audio).  Experiment with the 12bit (32kHz) setting and the 16 bit (48kHz) settings.

Look forward to hearing your results,

-Steve
