MultiMedia Access and RealNetworks Sign Licensing Agreement

MMAC's Products to Offer Performance Enhancements for RealSystem® G2 Internet Video Software

Dallas, Texas, Sept. 29, 1998 – MultiMedia Access Corporation (Nasdaq: MMAC), a leading provider of high-quality, standards-based video communications solutions, announced a licensing agreement with RealNetworks, Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK). Under the agreement, RealNetworks licensed to MMAC the source code for RealVideo® encoding software for acceleration on MMAC's popular Osprey® codecs.

MMAC's Osprey codecs will add performance for RealNetworks' RealSystem G2 Internet streaming software. MMAC will also incorporate this performance-enhancing solution plus additional functionality under RealSystem G2 into its ViewCast streaming server.

MMAC's Osprey codecs hardware-accelerate the video encoding for RealNetworks' RealVideo G2 Internet streaming software and complements the technology advancements jointly announced last week by Intel Corporation (Nasdaq: INTC) and RealNetworks.

"MMAC's ViewCast solutions offer high quality content creation and delivery capabilities for Internet video," said Len Jordan, Senior Vice President, RealNetworks, Inc.

"This further establishes MMAC's Internet video business and positions ViewCast to be the first system to deliver the performance and quality advantages of codec-accelerated RealVideo in a turnkey, video-broadcast server," stated Neal Page, Vice President, MultiMedia Access.

The video quality and ease-of-use delivered by the ViewCast and Osprey products have made them popular in the Internet video streaming market. MMAC's products have enabled the Internet video broadcasts of the Indy 500 time trials, a Mt. Everest climbing, the NASA Mar's Pathfinder Expedition, TeleCon Conferences plus numerous other events and industry conferences.

"Benefits of the ViewCast system are obvious. Using ViewCast, we are able to encode multiple bit-rate streams simultaneously on a single Windows NT server and broadcast video over the Internet," said Peter Mottur, President of HydroActive, a Newport, RI Internet content provider.

ViewCast servers, fully-configured, plug-and-play solutions, allow video content providers the benefits of high-quality video, multiple broadcast streams, and an easy to install and manage system. ViewCast systems allow any organization to quickly and confidently offer superior-quality video over the Internet or corporate intranets.

Scheduled for release in 4Q98, the next generation ViewCast systems will include the RealSystem G2 encoder accelerated with Osprey codecs. ViewCast systems delivered before that will receive free upgrades when RealSystem G2 is available.
